Street planters & trees
Local residents look after the trees and planters on the highway islands along Oxford Road. Did you know that a young tree needs at least 50 litres of water per week to stay healthy in the summer months?
The two elm trees in the islands at the Huntingdon Road end of Oxford Road were funded by donations of around £10–20 each from a group of local residents, and planted by the Cambridge City Council arboricultural team. Watering and general maintenance is looked after by residents. The residents at Australia Court have kindly offered their rainfall capture tanks to help.
The islands at the Wentworth Street junction were funded by the County Council. The trees in these islands are generally watered and maintained by the County team, while residents also take the initiative to keep the planters neat and tidy.
Gardening is very much a shared effort — residents help with watering, weeding, soil improvement and planting, and many have donated plants. Unfortunately plants, tree supports and rocks have occasionally gone missing, so please take care of what we have.
Trees for Streets
The Huntingdon Road elms are registered with Trees for Streets, the national street tree sponsorship scheme.
